Madrid Takes Its Car Ban to the Next Level

THINK BANNING CARS WILL LEAD TO ECONOMIC LOSSES? THINK AGAIN.

Starting in November, the city will make clear that downtown streets are not for drivers.

The only vehicles that will be allowed in this zone are cars that belong to residents who live there, zero-emissions delivery vehicles, taxis, and public transit. Even on a continent where many cities are scaling back car access, the plan is drastic.

This entitled, impatient, impaired driver passing on the right killed 2 young men, husbands, fathers, brothers.But it’s not ONLY his fault. The system in the US prioritizes driving, and the auto industry has such influence that driving is considered a basic human right, but safety on our roads is not. It’s so rare that a license is revoked at all, even if there’s a fatality, and never permanently. God forbid we make design changes on roads to keep vulnerable road users safe (that’s any road user outside a car). That drunk driver taken off the road would be warranted, and prevent him from killing again.
