Why is it weird not to own a car?The automotive industry has planted a bug in American brains that cars equal freedom and are tied to our personal identity. The financial burden of owning a car is ridiculous. Most cars are idle up to 90%of the time. Cars are destroying the planet and EVs won’t save us. Widening highways leads to induced demand (more cars), and over 40 thousand people are killed in traffic violence every year in the US. Roads are chewed up by traffic requiring constant repaving asphalt (oil), and runoff goes into waterways. We need more transit options, more and better infrastructure for walking and rolling. Unlocking my bike after the eclipse event on Asbury Park Boardwalk, an interaction with a guy. 🚲🍻Him: “I like your bike”. (For context, an old hybrid with a rusty basket.)🚲Me: “I like it too.” Him: I like your basket.” Me: “I like it too”. Inserting key into bike lock. Him: “I ride my bike everywhere around here. But I have a place in Jersey City, and they’ve gone overboard with the bike lanes.”“And those bike delivery guys…”.
